"Crusade" is the nineteenth episode of the ninth season of Stargate SG-1.
Synopsis
Vala Mal Doran uses a Long-range communication device from the Alteran Home Galaxy to make contact with Earth through Dr. Daniel Jackson. She warns Stargate Command that the Ori are coming to the Milky Way and there may be no way to stop them.
Previously on Stargate SG-1
The Long-range communication device takes Dr. Daniel Jackson and Vala Mal Doran to another galaxy, where they meet the worshippers of the Ori. They also encounter the Anti-Ori underground. Vala is burned alive for heresy, but revivified by a Prior. The Ori launch an attack on the Milky Way and attempt to build a Supergate in orbit of Kallana. It is destroyed by Vala using a Tel'tak after failing to ring back to Prometheus. Jackson and Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter discover Merlin's plans for a weapon that could defeat the Ori, and a Stargate address for the planet where he hid it.
Plot
A very pregnant Vala Mal Doran makes contact with Stargate Command, using the Long-range communication device to speak through Dr. Daniel Jackson. She tells the surprised SG-1 what happened to her after the Battle of Kallana. She materialised on an Ori homeworld in their galaxy - how, she does not know - and awakened in the bed of the man who found her, who thought that she was a gift from the gods. She learned that the town where he lives is one of dozens building ships and providing troops for the Ori invasion fleet. To stay undercover, she decided to take a role as homemaker to the crippled Tomin, the man who found her. When she learned of her inexplicable pregnancy, she quickly married Tomin to make him think it was his. However Vala had no clue who the father really was since she'd had no relations with anyone. She later found out that the child is in fact "the will of the Ori."
Meanwhile, on Earth, Colonel Chekov informs Major General Henry Landry that Russia has no interest in participating in the Stargate program, and plans to let their agreement with the United States of America expire. This means that Russia gets the Stargate back, as they had only loaned it to the USA. Russia apparently has the backup of China on this move.
Back in the interrogation room, Vala tells the rest of SG-1 that she was suspected as an unbeliever and was chained in public for three days by Seevis, the local Administrator. Tomin rescued her without interference after this time. When she went by herself to see the ships built she was surprised by Seevis, who revealed himself to be the leader of the Anti-Ori underground movement. He planned to sabotage the ships to kill thousands of Ori followers. Among other pre-Ori artifacts, Seevis had acquired the Ancient communication device that Vala and Daniel had used the first time, which is how Vala was able to use it again.
In the meantime, on Earth, Landry finds out that the Russians do not really want their gate back, but are merely using it as a bargaining chip. In exchange for the gate, the Americans are forced to give them the next Daedalus-class battlecruiser under production (the third in the series after the Daedalus and Odyssey).
Meanwhile, on the Ori homeworld, a Prior visits Tomin and informs him that the same ailment he was born with, and which he had recently healed him from, had also made it impossible for Tomin to father a child. When he asks if his wife has therefore deceived him, he is told by the Prior that the child is the will of the Ori and that he will be rewarded for going along with it. Upstairs Vala overhears that her pregnancy is indeed 'immaculate' as she suspected/feared, and that the Ori are responsible.
When the day comes for the priors to bless the ships, Vala begs Tomin to stay with her instead of going to the ceremony, because she has "a bad feeling", but he refuses. Later, Seevis' sabotage plan fails and nothing happens, although Vala is not sure whether it was the priors or the Ori who stopped it. In either case, the Ori are aware of the planned sabotage, and send Tomin to kill Seevis. Tomin kills both him and Denya, and destroys the communication device, disrupting the communication between Vala and Daniel. She somehow manages to persuade Tomin that she was not part of the conspiracy, that Seevis had forced her into using the communication stones, and that she will accompany him on his crusade against the nonbelievers.
On Earth, the SGC realize the communication has been severed and decide to do everything possible to find out where the Ori have built their second Supergate. SG-1 decides to search for Merlin's weapon which is able to kill ascended beings. With the Ori gone, their followers would no longer see them as gods, and the crusade would be unimportant.
After hearing their argument, Landry eventually gives them the go-ahead, and SG-1 depart for their newest mission: find Merlin's weapon.

Vala: That's the thing. I don't know.
Carter: As in?
Vala: I swear. I did... none of the necessary bits. Between my arrival in the Ori galaxy and my wedding night—which was definitely after I knew for sure—there is no way, humanly possible that I know of, that I could have gotten pregnant.
Teal'c: (Referring to Vala's mysterious pregnancy) You have been impregnated without copulation.
Vala: Yes, and I'm absolutely terrified. Have any of you ever heard of anything like it?
Mitchell: (after everyone pauses) Well, there's one.
Teal'c: Darth Vader.
(Everyone gives Teal'c a strange look)
Vala: Really!?
(Teal'c nods)
Vala: How did that turn out?
Mitchell: Actually, I was thinking of King Arthur.
Carter: You were!?
Vala: So, this girl in the bar. Her name was Denya. And we struck up a bit of a friendship. By the looks on your faces I can see you're not surprised I had more in common with the village harlot than I did with any of the ladies in the local knitting circle.
Mitchell: I don't know what you're talking about.

- All of Vala Mal Doran's voiceovers were filmed, so that the director could pick which parts would be voiceover and which parts would be shown.
- According to the DVD audio commentary for this episode, the reason for the major thread in this storyline is that Claudia Black was pregnant at the time.
- The Daedalus-class battlecruisers are referred to as "304"s. Russia will get the next Daedalus-class battlecruiser, the Korolev.
- In "Avalon, Part 2", Dr. Daniel Jackson says the inhabitants of the Ori galaxy probably speak Ancient, and that the communicator is translating. However, this episode shows Vala communicating freely with the locals of a village in the Ori galaxy, even though she does not understand any Ancient.
- When Vala questions SG-1 if there were any virginal births (or at least fatherless conceptions) in their culture, Teal'c immediately mentions Darth Vader, a reference to the claim of Vader's mother that he was born with no father. This echoes Teal'c's fandom of the Star Wars movies from earlier episodes. ("Ascension") Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell points out that King Arthur was also born of a virgin. (The Once and Future King). Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter seems bemused that this was Mitchell's first thought; perhaps because Mitchell, who has a Christian heritage, could well have thought of Jesus Christ.
