The Aturen are a humanoid species from planet Atura in the Milky Way galaxy. The Nox of Gaia regard them as their adopted children.
History
Ancient Aturens
Before they were mentored by the Nox, ancient Aturens were present on PXY-787, a planet that had humanoid inhabitants that were used as slaves by a Goa'uld to mine a precious metal. The Goa'uld left unexpectedly and never returned. The humanoids left the planet through the Stargate and took tree roots with them. (RPG: "Prey")
The Nox
A millennia ago, while the Aturen were still hunters and gatherers, they were visited by a family of Nox who were ill and sought unique herbs that grew on Atura. By the time the Nox learned the Aturen's language to communicate, the Nox were too ill to travel to find the herbs. The Aturen formed a party and went on the dangerous journey. They found the herbs but many perished. The Nox were cured and felt obligated to pay back the Aturen for their sacrifice and began to shepherd the race.[3] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
The Shameful War
- Main article: Shameful war
At some point, the Aturen's Great Houses went to war with each other over land and borders. The Shameful war came to an end after an atomic weapon detonated above the Shinolon forest. The fusion warhead destroyed ten square miles of terrain in an instant, and caused forest fires that destroyed hundreds of miles in every direction from the blast. The Nox, who had been not interfering up into this point and instead stayed in their floating city that had been established on Atura, brought the leaders of the Great Houses to them. The Aturen finally set aside their differences and worked to end the war peacefully and the Nox used their technology to cure the land. Life eventually returned to the continent except for a small section known as the Great Shame.[4] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
The Coming of the Tok'ra
Five years prior to joining Phoenix Site, the Aturens had their first contact with a species other than the Nox. After escaping the System Lord Ba'al's forces, the Tok'ra Polonius' Tel'tak crashed near an Aturen listening post. Its crew, from the House of the Stars the Estrellus, managed to extract Polonius and brought him to Atura. The Aturen Parliament was angry at his rescue, as they feared Polonius would bring the conflict he spoke of to Atura, however most of the Parliament realized Polonius' stories of the state of the Milky Way galaxy couldn't be ignored.[4]
Polonius stayed on Atura for two years, taking part in discussions with the Parliament and swaying several of the Great Houses to his side. The Parliament eventually voted on ending their neutrality and to began negotiations with the Tau'ri. Polonius returned to his people with several Aturen ambassadors.[4]
The Aturen are grateful for the guidance the Tok'ra and Tau'ri have provided them, however they are still wary of dealing with them. They see entering the war against the Goa'uld as the morally right thing to do and they must do something to help.[6]
In 2002, the Aturen sent their best people to Phoenix Site to not only learn from their allies but to bring the Aturen philosophy to them with the hope that after the war is over, they can teach others to live as they do.[6] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
Physiology

The Aturen are tall and thin and have an average height between six feet four inches and seven feet tall. Their hair and eyes can be any color, often growing more vibrant with age.[2]
Due to expanding across Atura, they have multiple skin tones, though their skin is often paler than humans. Most Aturen belonging to a particular house will often have similar traits.[2] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
Due to being nurtured by the Nox, their physical appearance is also similar to them.[7]
Abilities
- Invisibility: Aturen who are Noxian Pacifists have the ability to make themselves invisible. They are not as skilled as the Nox, though Noxian pacifists have advanced mental techniques honed by years of pacifism to hide themselves from view.[2]
- Ritual of Life: Aturen Spiritualists, who are Noxian Pacifists that have been chosen as a student by the Nox, had been indoctrinated into some of their ancient practices, such as the Ritual of Life. This ritual can bring back the recently deceased.[8]
- Natural resilience: Aturen, who aren't Noxian pacifists, have a natural resilience and advantage against poison and disease.[2] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
Culture
Society
- Main article: Great Houses
For Aturen, family is everything.[6] Their society is based on which house an Aturen belongs to. There are thousands of small houses spread across Atura and there are five Great Houses which control most of their society. Each is based on their own interpretation of the Creed,[1] which is center to their philosophy and their laws are based around a strict interpretations of it. It is a deeply personal belief for all Aturen and the principles of the Creed have been debated for centuries.[6] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
Politics
- Main article: Aturen Parliament
The Aturen Parliament is the governing body of the Aturens where they use parliament and debates to settle disputes.[1] The Great Houses holds the most seats and dominate the political landscape.[6] The House of the Dawn occupies the most seats and is the House that most frequently handles diplomacy with other species. The current Prime Minister of Atura is an Eiteldar, which the Eiteldar make up the House of Dawn.[9] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
Technology
- Main article: Aturen technology

Aturen seek to live in symbiosis with their environment. They have shunned most forms of technology that is either too toxic for the environment or too dangerous to use safely.[10] Most of what their technology is built from is grown in massive groves on Atura and their homes are built within trees and hillsides.[2] (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
