Mutagens were collected by Sarah Kerrigan's zerg throughout the StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm single player campaign. She could use them to purchase upgrades to specific zerg units.[1] It is collected from various creatures in missions.[2] Abathur directed this process at the evolution pit.[1]
Mutagens were cut from the game, as developers felt it was too similar to the game mechanics of Wings of Liberty. A new system was developed where zerg upgraded over time, leading to an evolutionary branch a player could choose with a specific mission.[3] Biomass effectively replaced mutagen in the new system.
