Mauna Koala

Mauna Koala was a cone shaped super-volcano island on the planet "Goldilocks." It was located on the western portion of the planet, in the southeastern corner of an island archipelago, and named by the terran refugee Jake. It was destroyed shortly before the Second Great War.

Mauna Koala was the tallest of three volcanoes on the island it was situated, and before its destruction the only active of the three. The three had formed a triangular shaped island from their lava flow. Mauna Koala itself is so tall that it had a snow cap and glaciers, and its meltwater irrigated the island below. The size of the volcano created six distinct ecosystems. The low gravity of the planet encouraged the volcano to grow larger than average, and the slopes of the volcano were almost vertical, which created faster lava flows.

As Mauna Koala was formed, lava tubes formed in its structure, creating deep caves the ran through the volcano's structures. The volcano had deep cracks from water erosion, quakes, and ancient eruptions.[1]

History

Mauna Koala was first used by a group of protoss acolytes, who wished to use a xel'naga relic named the psionic lens to isolate zerg bioforms, giving them individual personalities in the hope it would disrupt the Zerg Swarm. They utilized the interior of the volcano as a research facility, and imported zerg breeds, cutting them from the hive mind with an isolation field. However, the individual zerg panicked, and attacked their captors, overwhelming the protoss.

Later, the dark templar Lassatar investigated the volcano to discover the fate of his acolytes. Meanwhile, a Terran Dominion refugee fled to the island the volcano was housed on to settle it. However, the two discovered the zerg inside the volcano, and Lassatar used the psionic lens to influence Jake into setting explosives in key areas in the lava tubes of Mauna Koala. This caused the volcano to detonate and collapse, the resulting explosion destroying it and the island.[1]
