The orphanage, within a day's ride of Miradero, is where Miss Flores was raised by nuns. The orphanage comprises three buildings and a courtyard surrounded by a wall.[1]
The nuns fed the orphans only bland cafeteria food, leading to Miss Flores's taste for piquant fare.[2]
The PAL rode to the orphanage on their first overnight camping trip by themselves, in an attempt to deliver the nuns a wedding invitation for Miss Flores's marriage to Jim Prescott, only to find the orphanage abandoned and overrun by wolves. Lucky was, however, able to recover, from a filing cabinet in the dormitory office, an envelope marked with "KF" crossed off, containing a locket and a photograph of Miss Flores's parents and Miss Flores as a baby, which Lucky gave to Miss Flores as a gift.[1]
