— Wolvurkel, Sonic the Hedgehog #8

Wolvurkel is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He was one of Dr. Ivo Robotnik's Super-powered 'Bots created to destroy Sonic.

History

Wolvurkel was one of Ivo Robotnik's many specially designed Super-powered 'Bots made to fight Sonic. After 'Botman failed, Wolvurkel was intended to be based on the character of Wolverine. However, when called in to replace 'Botman, it was revealed that a communications glitch had occurred, resulting in Wolvurkel instead of a Wolverine bot, much to Robotnik's humiliation.[1]

Trivia

  • Wolvurkel is a portmanteau of the Marvel character Wolverine and the Family Matters character Steve Urkel, the latter of whom he greatly resembles. The latter was meant to be a tribute to Jaleel White, the actor playing Urkel, who was the voice actor of Sonic in the Sonic the Hedgehog television series.
    • In fact, Sonic makes a direct reference to Jaleel White by saying to the robot "You sound familiar."
  • Wolvurkel is the only Super-powered 'Bot not shown to be destroyed.
  • Wolvurkel is also the only Super-powered 'Bot not to be shown in the flashback of the group in Issue 57.
