Marmolims[1] are creatures that appear in the Sonic X anime series. They are an alien species native to Planet Marmolim.

Description

Anatomy

Marmolim are very short creatures, even compared to anthropomorphic animals such as Sonic. They usually have odd shaped, yet still round, heads with clusters of fluff on top. Said hair often matches their skin color to a degree, though not always. Their skin color itself varies widely in color, as Marmolim have been shown to come in many different colors. Marmolims’ eyes have no sclera.

Characteristics and culture

The Marmolim culture is very magic based, as practices such as fortune telling and soothe saying are very common among them. They even claim their spacefaring technology to work off magic.[2] Uncannily, the Marmolim seem to possess a veritable ability to perform magic - as their predictions, assessments and spells performed invariably prove to be accurate.

Before the Metarex arrived, travelers from across the galaxy would flock to the planet for their fortunetelling and matchmaking abilities. Their magic also extends to areas such as love spells, love potions, divination, the ability to understand a person's character and creating charms that can influence a person's work, health and money, or protect them from disease and harm, such as a bracelet that protects its user from water which was used to protect Sonic from drowning in an underground torrent.[1] One of their strongest spells can supposedly affect fate itself such that a couple will be joined together for the rest of their lives, which Cosmo and Tails unwittingly were exposed to. Tragically, this seemed to hold true, as Cosmo died mere moments after confessing her love for Tails.

Due to their genuine ability to divine the future, the Marmolim are strong believers in fate and their limited capacity to change it. They rely on fortunetelling for all important decisions and are utterly convinced that future events will occur as they have preordained. As a result their behavior comes off as extremely weird and erratic even compared to other aliens in the universe. They may experience great and exaggerated moments of sadness, for example, then immediately brush aside their worries in assurance that they will succeed anyway, seeming almost aloof despite their planet being in peril. They are also rather blunt and crude; after finding a Chaos Emerald and being told of its great importance by the Blue Typhoon's crew, the Marmolim rudely refused to give it back on the simple basis that they liked it, had found it first and that fate allowed them to find it for a reason. They would not part with it even after Knuckles tried to take it back by force and only ceded once offered a ride back home in exchange.

They use a coin-based currency called Fleebos. They also have ships that resemble meteors. Also, akin to most anthropomorphic animals from Sonic's world, Marmolim generally wear nothing more than gloves and shoes, including the females like Momo.[1]

History

Anime

Metarex Saga

A trio of Marmolim were first encountered by the Blue Typhoon crew upon bringing their spaceship and its members onto the Blue Typhoon, where the Marmolim were discovered to have a Chaos Emerald with them, though they refused to give it. Despite this, the majority of the group agreed to take the aliens back to their planet, which Amy objected to until she heard of the love spells they have.[1]

Arriving on the home planet of the Marmolim, the crew began to explore the area, experiencing their culture. Sometime later, Sonic and Tails assisted the creatures in destroying the planet's source of disease which grew underground where the Planet Egg was once kept, earning their team the praise of the alien race.[1]
