Gerbil[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian dingo and a member of the Dingo Regime, who served as Helmut Von Stryker's right-hand man, and later a colonel under Kage Von Stryker.

Appearance

Gerbil is a mobian dingo of average size and stature. Originally, Gerbil had black eyes and brown ears, although by the time of the Angel Island Takeover, his eyes had gained an orange coloration, and his ears gained tufts of black fur on their tips.[1][2]

For attire, Gerbil originally wore the standard Dingo Regime uniform of a dark green military cap, a gray jacket, a dark green tie, a gray utility belt, and dark green pants. By during the Angel Island Takeover, Gerbil wore the new standard attire for the regime, a crimson outfit and fez, in addition to a brown vest seemingly meant to designate his rank as colonel.[1][2]

History

Lost Paradise

With the effects of the Hyper Zone Projector wearing off, and ghostly figures of echidnas appearing around him and his men, Gerbil ran to report the occurrence to General Helmut Von Stryker, who was not the least surprised, and ordered him to assemble a team of commanders to keep at the ready, to which Gerbil obeyed.[1] Terrified, Gerbil later reported to Helmut of the echidna's full arrival in the Zone, to which he told to get a grip on himself. Later when the building began collapsing, Gerbil warned Helmut of its instability, but was ignored. While Helmut and Knuckles fought, several echidnas held Gerbil at gunpoint, as they required his help to find any casualties caused by the collapse. Begrudgingly agreeing to this, he helped direct all the echidna and dingo civilians into a bunker.[3]

Dark Alliance

Gerbil later listened to an echidna political broadcast, and although unsure of what it meant, was satisfied with Helmut's answer of "further echidna treachery". Later, while walking through a dilapidated dingo neighborhood in Echidnaopolis, Gerbil was ordered by Helmut to gather the Dingo Regime, as the general had a plan to take advantage of the political infighting amongst the echidnas. However, Gerbil and all the dingos present were suddenly ambushed from an alleyway by the crazed Dark Legionnaire Xenin, who handily knocked out and captured Helmut, then directed his cohorts to imprison Gerbil and the other dingos in the city's sewers. Gerbil and the other Dingos present were then loaded into a truck, and hauled off to the sewer.[4] Gerbil was presumably freed from his confinement when the Dark Legion was subsequently pushed back from Echidnaopolis by the combined efforts of Knuckles, Locke, and Spectre.[5]

Angel Island takeover

Over a year later, the Dingo Regime (and by extension, Gerbil) fell under the control of Helmut's son, Kage Von Stryker, who sold them out to the Eggman Empire in return for freedom and sponsorship during the Angel Island Takeover. As a result of this, Gerbil was placed as the colonel in charge of an echidna slave camp on the outskirts of Marble Garden.[2][6]

However, the prison camp eventually drew the attention of Sonic the Hedgehog and the Chaotix when the group arrived on the island following up on a transmission from the Technolotree. During the ensuring battle, Gerbil singled out Knuckles and almost defeated the echidna, but was knocked out by a sudden attack from Sonic. Despite the efforts of Gerbil's forces, they too were knocked out out by the heroes, allowing for the camp to be liberated.[2]

Enerjak: Reborn

Later, the fourth Enerjak banished all the remaining members of the Dingo Regime (excluding Kage, who he killed) to the Sandopolis Desert, Gerbil presumably included.[7]

Personality

Gerbil shares the Dingo Regime's hatred towards the echidnas.[2]

Powers and abilities

Gerbil possesses some swordplay skill, as displayed by his usage of the retractable energy sword built into his Angel Island Takeover-era outfit.[2]
