"The Big Sleepover" is the second episode of the first season of the Disney Jr. animated series Sofia the First. It premiered on January 18, 2013.
Overview
Sofia invites her two best friends, Jade and Ruby, over to the castle for her first royal sleepover, but when Amber forces Sofia to make Jade and Ruby change their habits, many things go bad and Sofia fears the slumber party has been messed up. Meanwhile, Cedric tries to swipe Sofia's magic amulet during a puppet show and magic act.
Plot
Sofia is going to have her first Royal Slumber Party. Amber brings her to the castle's observatory, where everyone will be sleeping that night, and informs her the most important part of a Royal Slumber Party is the guests. She invited Princess Hildegard and Princess Clio, the most popular Princesses at Royal Prep, while Sofia invited her friends Ruby and Jade. Amber is shocked that Sofia invites village girls and says that they're not princesses, but Sofia informs her that Ruby and Jade are really fun to be with. Down in his lair, Cedric is visited by King Roland and Queen Miranda and is asked to put on a magic show for the girls at their slumber party. Disgusted at having to do such a thing, he chooses to use this chance to steal Sofia's amulet by performing a magic trick with his puppets that will make the amulet vanish right into his hands.
Amber's guests, Princess Hildegard and Princess Clio, are the first to arrive at the castle and, much to their irritation, Sofia's guests arrive soon after. When Hildegard questions if those "village girls" are arriving to their party, Amber states that Sofia invited them, causing Hildegard and Clio to turn and glare at her. Sofia promises that they'll see that Ruby and Jade are the best. After changing into their PJs, Ruby and Jade do a goofy dance while wearing pinecones in their hair and rapping. The Princess trio are astonished, but Sofia likes what they're doing so much that she runs over and joins in. Appalled, Amber, Hildegard, and Clio pull Sofia aside and tell her, through a song, that at a perfect slumber party, everyone has to fit in. But Sofia disagrees, saying that the point is to have fun and she will show them that Ruby and Jade can fit in, though the princesses are unconvinced.
Sofia gives her friends Royal Makeovers to make them look like princesses, but they still don't really act like princesses. While painting fans, Ruby paints a smiley face on hers instead of roses like she's expected to, then Jade knocks over a display of the Solar System while playing pin-the-tail-on-the-unicorn. Before Amber can scold Sofia again for her friends' behavior, it's time for Cedric's magic show, and Sofia doesn't see how Ruby and Jade could cause trouble when all they have to do is sit and watch.
Cedric's plan to steal Sofia's amulet does not work since Ruby and Jade keep interrupting his act. James enters the room, and the two of them knock over the chocolate milk fountain in their rush to go over to him, getting chocolate milk all over themselves and a small amount on Amber's gown, which she throws a temper tantrum over. While Sofia's friends are getting cleaned up and Amber and her friends leave to go to the ballroom, Sofia sadly tells James that Ruby and Jade are ruining the party and doing everything wrong, according to Amber and the princesses anyway, but James says it shouldn't matter what they think.
Sofia gently tells her friends to act more like the Princesses and they promise to. However, when Ruby and Jade witness the other princesses dancing gracefully, Jade gets reluctant since she doesn't know how to dance gracefully, and neither does Ruby. The two give it a try anyway, but they appear to be doing it improperly and incorrectly out of not being good at graceful dancing. Eventually, they are no longer having fun and end up just sitting and watching the others dance. They then inform Sofia that they're gonna go home. When a worried Sofia asks why, Jade says that she and Ruby are not having a good time. Sofia happily tells them that they're finally fitting in, only to make things worse when she says they were being embarrassing. A hurt Jade angrily responds by telling her off (and so does an equally hurt Ruby), and telling her that she and Ruby like to talk and like to laugh. Then, she says that maybe they shouldn't be friends anymore if Sofia finds them embarrassing, and storms off with Ruby. The Princess trio couldn't care less that they're leaving, but Sofia feels remorseful for making them feel bad and goes after them, determined and set things right, but finds that they're already gone, as she notices their princess dresses lying on the bed in the observatory. Then her mother, Miranda, arrives and informs her that Jade just requested she summon her father, and asks if everything is alright. Sofia confesses to Miranda that she told Jade and Ruby to act more like Amber and the other princesses, attempting to help them fit in, but ended up making them feel bad. Miranda says that Sofia should be behaving like a princess herself. When Sofia asks what she means, Miranda explains that being a real princess is about treating others and appreciating them for who they are, especially if they're her friends, and says that Sofia shouldn't try to change them, no matter who else is around.
This makes Sofia realize her mistake, saying that she really messed up and is worried that it might be too late to do anything about it. But Miranda explains that it's never too late to start acting like a princess, and apologizing is the right thing to do. Sofia hurries to catch up with Ruby and Jade and apologize as they are getting prepared to leave and she begs them to don't leave. Jade questions Sofia if they are embarrassing her, but Sofia says they aren't and says that they're special just the way they are. Jade and Ruby smile, and Ruby says, "We are kind of fun." Sofia apologizes for how she acted and for trying to change them, hoping they'll give her another chance to make it up to them. She suggests they start over and have their own slumber party with just the three of them, like they always do. After Ruby and Jade accept Sofia's apology, the trio begins their slumber party in Sofia's room. Back at the observatory, Amber and the other princesses hear them having fun and go downstairs to join them. Amber explains to Sofia that she, Hildegard, and Clio aren't having as much fun without her and her friends, so Sofia, Jade, and Ruby welcome them to join the party. Soon, the entire group is partying together again.
