Ice Capades

Ice Capades was an annual traveling ice show that featured various types of performances.

The Smurfs were featured multiple times in the Ice Capades as the act for younger audiences, the program as a whole usually referred to as Smurfs Alive! or Smurfs 'N' Ice Capades. The stories presented were based on the Smurfs cartoon show and featured audio of the voice actors speaking and singing as their respective characters.

The first Smurfs production number was introduced in 1982, titled The Smurfcapades Winter Talent Show. This and the 1983 show, It's Fun To Be A Smurf, were featured acts for a few years. However, other Smurf stories were introduced over the decade, one being 1987's Smurfelrock Magic!, which starred characters such as the Smurflings and Hogatha.

There were exclusive Smurf souvenirs available for purchase after the shows, such as pennants, banners, and pin-back buttons depicting characters like Papa Smurf and Smurfette. Other merchandise, including figures, t-shirts, coloring books, and plush toys was also available.

Notes

  • A squirting flower accessory was added to the Jokey suit, presumably to make the character easier to identify on the ice without the present prop in hand.
  • Hefty's arm tattoo is given a different color scheme, the heart now white, while the arrow through it remains black.
  • The head to the Smurfette suit depicts her with pigtails, a design frequently used on merchandise with no relation to the cartoon.
  • The Azrael suit depicts him with a white tip to his tail.
  • In a cast photograph, a mix-up or two can be seen, such as the wrong Smurf wearing Handy's head.
  • Footage and information regarding the Smurfs ice shows are hard to find, but currently exist in the form of promotional material and shared recordings by viewers.
