The Cosmic Staff is a long rod-like weapon that once belonged to Sylvester Pemberton but was passed down to his protogé Courtney Whitmore after he died. Prior to Pemberton, the Staff appears to have belonged to a super-hero called Starman.
Powers and Abilities
- Teleportation - Allows the wielder to transverse themselves or others anywhere on Earth.
- Energy projection- Allows the wielder to shoot energy from the staff.
- Super dexterity - The wielder becomes more dexterous and mobile.
- Super strength - The wielder becomes stronger; enabling them to perform strenuous action.
Vulnerabilities
The staff required a wielder for its abilities to be activated.
Season Nine
Sylvester Pemberton, the Star-spangled kid, is out patrolling, with the staff in hand, when he notices Chloe Sullivan down below him. He talks with her but they get interrupted, and Sylvester, sensing danger, throws Chloe into a dumpster. Off-screen, he battles with Cameron Mahkent but he gets stabbed with an icicle shard and dies.
Courtney Whitmore steals the staff from the police evidence locker and is confronted by Oliver over it. Kent Nelson arrives and uses the staff to teleport himself and Courtney away. Later, Courtney fights Icicle with the staff. In the fight, she loses the staff and Icicle sends ice daggers straight at her, but she is saved by Green Arrow.
Season Ten
After the engagement party for Clark and Lois at the Watchtower, Courtney came to Oliver's aid along with Carter Hall when Oliver was being attacked by a mob of civilians. Courtney used the Cosmic Staff to teleport them back to the Watchtower.
In the Comics
Originally called the "Gravity Rod", it first appeared in Adventure Comics #61 (April, 1941). It was created by Ted Knight, who used it to become the original Starman. Knight later gave a new version, called the "Cosmic Rod" to Sylvester Pemberton. However, it was soon turned into the Cosmic Converter Belt. In his old age, Ted Knight created the Cosmic Staff, which was used by Jack Knight (the third Starman). After Jack Knight retired from heroics, the Cosmic Staff was passed down to Courtney Whitmore, who became Stargirl.
