- "So hard to stay sober"
—SZA
Kazu "Zu" Gamble (portrayed by Kate Hudson) is the main protagonist of the 2021 film Music. She is a woman in her late twenties or early thirties, who is a recovering alcoholic that finds herself the sole caretaker of her half-sister Music, after their grandmother Millie dies.
Appearance
Zu is a woman with a fairly average build. She often wears clothes such as sport bras and large t-shirts. However, she is most often seen in a red skirt and a blue t-shirt that reads "I'm not old, I'm a recycled teenager!" She appears to have a tattoo on her left arm, of a line running up from her hand to her shoulder. Her most noticeable feature is her hair, shaved down to a buzzcut.
Costumes in musical numbers.
- "1+1": - a bright yellow swimsuit and a swimcap.
- "Insecure": - a costume resembling an unbloomed rose, and braided eyebrows.
- "Could I Love with No Fear": - a cream-coloured dress over a long-sleeved shirt with orange stripes.
- "Easy": - a black fitted jumpsuit with a large red backpack resembling a heart.
- "Music": - an Asian-inspired dress with a pattern that has flowers and a large dragon.
- "Mountains": - a white fitted jumpsuit with a large red accessory on her back.
- "Together": - a large braid wrapped around her head and a costume resembling a peace sign-giving hand with yellow nails.
Personality
Zu appears to be very childish and immature, as said by Ebo: she "has the mind of a child". She starts out reckless and seems to be rarely concerned with actually taking care of Music, as the only thing that strikes her as important is getting enough money to leave Music in a facility and move to Costa Rica. However, as she spends more time with Music, she begins to grow and become more loving and caring towards her younger sister. Although she is very spontaneous, she is revealed to be struggling with alcoholism. After she suffers a relapse and receives a head wound, she begins to become more mature, doing everything possible to keep herself and Music out of harm's way.
