Toga (トーガ Tōga ) is a "flame robe" (炎の衣 Honō no Koromo ) that Margery Daw puts on during battles. It enables her to transform into a short and stout beast.[1]
Background
Margery demonstrates great power in both offense and defense by combining Toga with her other Unrestricted Spells such as the Improvisational Poem of Slaughter; she can split the Toga upon receiving an attack and form each piece into a Toga to create duplicates, or transform it into a binding Unrestricted Spell to capture the opponent who attacks her.
This flame robe is also a proof of Margery's fighting spirit; she could not wear it when she had lost her will to fight. Conversely, when she was burning with vengeance against the Silver, it took on a comet-like form, meaning its manifestation was influenced by her motivation. Like after her fight with Shana, who came to protect Lamies, she lost an ability to don Toga for some time.
The giant wolf form that appeared during her fight with Shana due to a surge of power is explained as the largest form of Toga. The term "manifestation" was used, both in the novel and anime, to signify that Marchocias' original form had temporarily appeared. But in truth, this was not a true manifestation, which would normally destroy the contractor's body.[2]
In her final battle in Misaki City against Sydonay, Margery used multiple Unrestricted Spell Insignia that she scattered around to controlled and utilized the massive Power of Existence left behind by Crimson Denizens who departed for Xanadu. Using this energy, she transformed into what could be described as a giant multi-headed wolf to fight against the transformed General.
In the novel
Toga takes shapes of a plump, ultramarine beast which looks like a raised pillow or a kigurumi-like costume. Its eyes and nose are holes, its mouth has jagged fangs. Like a kigurumi, it is possible to stick one's face out. It can extend its arms and has a certain level of defensive capability.
In the anime
The design of Toga has a more realistic beast-like appearance, which is different from what is depicted in the novel.
Additionally, Toga can be broken with the anti-flame ring, Azure, as shown by Friagne during his encounter with Margery in the anime. As this event is anime-only, there is no depiction suggesting that Toga possesses the properties of real flames, so whether it could be extinguished or not remains unclear.
Trivia
- Toga is likely named after the ancient Roman garment.
- The visual inspiration for Toga in the novels and manga is Totoro pajamas.[3]
