Wonder Boy

Wonder Boy is a platform game, developed by Escape. Originally a 1986 arcade game, it was later ported for home consoles, with Sega porting the home console versions.

Plot

The titular caveman, Tom-Tom (sometimes referred to simple as Boy or Wonder Boy depending on the version) has set out to rescue his girlfriend Tanya (or Tina in some versions) who has been kidnapped by the Dracon (or Dark King in some versions).

Gameplay

The player takes control of Tom-Tom as he runs through a variety of stages.

At the top of the screen is a vitality meter which slowly ticks down over time. This can be replenished by collecting food along the way, but bumping into enemies or obstacles such as rocks will lower it greatly. If the vitality meter runs out, the Wonder Boy will lose a life. Touching any enemy will also cause the player to lose a life.

Along the way, Tom-Tom will be able to collect power ups by breaking open eggs:

  • A skateboard that allows him greater speed and an additional hit point at the cost of constantly moving forward.
  • A stone hatchet which can be thrown out for a projectile attack in an arc.
  • Milk which will replenish the vitality gauge
  • Mushrooms which will grant an additional 500 points
  • An angel which will temporarily grant Tom-Tom invincibility.

However there are also red spotted eggs that contain Gods of Death which will attempt to catch up to the player and attempt to drain the player's vitality.

Players can collect Tanya Dolls which when collected will double the points at the end of the game and collecting all of them will unlock a bonus eighth area in the game. There is one in each level, sometimes hidden, sometimes not.

Occasionally the player will come across a handbag. Collecting this will summon Tina's sister, Pina, who will take Tom-Tom to the bonus level Warp Gates.

After every four levels, Tom-Tom will face off against Dracon in a boss battle.
