Studio 128

"Studio 128" is the name often attributed to a game development group at SEGA of Japan, being where Yu Suzuki and a team of five to ten developers worked on several of SEGA's iconic cutting-edge "taikan" games. This name comes from a secretive building located about a five minute walk away from SoJ's main offices. Although they technically didn't develop any games in this building until 1987's After Burner, the name is often used to refer to this team's pre-1988 work in general. Much of the work done in said building was kept a secret from the rest of the company - reportedly, there was an incident where then-SEGA president Hayao Nakayama was blocked from entering, much to his dismay.

It's difficult to know the team's history, as they were not directly credited in any of their games. However, they're known to have become SEGA R&D #8 following a restructuring in 1988, and are often considered the predecessors to SEGA AM2.
