Joy is a major secondary character in Shenmue II.

Past
The daughter of Chunyun Liang, a successful Hong Kong businessman and trader, Joy has known Master Chen and Guizhang Chen since she was very young, becoming friends with the latter and talking about martial arts and Japan. One day she was kidnapped by a gang looking to get a ransom out of Chunyun Liang. Instead, Guizhang Chen kicked the door down and rescued her, taking out the thugs in the process. Since then she's had a slight crush on him.
Joy's also friends with several members of the Heavens gang, including Wuying Ren and Wong. In Shenmue the Animation, she even works alongside the Heavens group, scouting out people getting off at the harbour for potential pickpocket targets. She seems particularly protective of Wong, acting as a big sister figure to him.
Shenmue II
Joy first runs into Ryo Hazuki when he arrives in Hong Kong, nearly running him over in the process on her motorcycle. She instantly takes a shine to Ryo, helping him out however she can, including finding him lodgings and getting him a job down at the harbour.

Trivia
- Joy's eyes change colour depending on the media.
- Her eyes are blue and green in Shenmue II game model;
- They are brown in her Shenmue II renders;
- They are brown in Shenmue the Animation;
- They are grey in Shenmue Side Story series.
- Joy can be phoned up in Shenmue III. Ryo can tell Joy about meeting up with Ren in China, ask her about Wong or ask how she is. There's a lot of awkwardness during their call.
- Joy likes to say the phrase 'Hang On' which whilst a commonly said phrase when talking to another when riding together, is also another game by Yu Suzuki. This is likely not a coincidence given Shenmue's many references to past Yu Suzuki works.
