Gene (ジェネ Gen-ay) is the lead heroine of Phantasy Star Online 2 es from season 1 onwards.
Appearance
History
Gene first appears in Phantasy Star Online 2 es being introduced to the player by Seraphy who has assigned her to be the player's teammate alongside the Weaponoid, More in order to investigate the unexplained destruction of an ARKS EMS research facility that killed 208,893 ARKS staff members including Gene's parents four months ago. Tracking down the only known survivor, a Deuman know as Zaccard, is their best possible chance for solving what happened.
Whilst she works exceptionally hard and works well with both More and 'Leader' (her affectionate nickname for the player), her body has an unusually high photon consumption rate which leaves her breathless and low on stamina after every combat encounter.
The team manage to track Zaccard down, and after cornering him, it appears he is the one behind the bombings. Gene, outraged and distraught furiously attacks Zaccard to avenge her parents but overexerts herself and ends up passing out. Zaccard manages to escape as a result and the team is temporarily disbanded, with Gene needing to recover.
In order to improve themselves, Gene and More spend two years going through intense training in order to raise their stamina, alternating between frozen and volcanic worlds. Gene's outfit also gets altered by the medical team to the Stella Tears version in order to aid with her high photon consumption rate as more exposed skin allows for better photon absorption.
After meeting back up with their Leader, Gene and More reform their team, the Darker Busters, in order to seek the truth behind the incident. They head to Planet Wopal in hopes of discovering why Zaccard possesses the ability to command Darkers but are cornered by Dante, a young man who also possesses the ability to control Darkers. Gene once again physically overexerts herself thanks to the heat intensified photon absorption, but they are saved from Dante by the sudden appearance of Annette, a Newman ARKS member. After Gene recovers from heat exhaustion Annette joins the Dark Busters and they pursue Dante in order to learn more about his connection with Zaccard.
Gene comes into contact with Levis, a young woman with the same abilities as both Dante and Zaccard, and seems to hold a grudge against Gene in particular. After engaging in battle with her, Gene witnesses Fel, a young boy who rushes to the aid of Levis. Seeing her opponents care about one another after they hurt them, Gene begins to question her reasons for fighting with doubts creeping in and she brings it up with her comrades.
Gene later begins to recall a strange memory, a time of her being with Zaccard.

- Gene is playable in Season 3 in special missions using preset loadouts.
- Gene appears in Idola: Phantasy Star Saga as a recruitable unit. This is her first appearance outside of Japan.
- Her name is localised to Jeanne in Idola: Phantasy Star Saga, but her name comes from the word Genesis.
- Gene has lost her memories in Idola: Phantasy Star Saga.
- She comments that the Leader was always kind and protected her, More always worried about her, Annette and Bruno waited for her even though she was a slow walker.
- Gene appears on a body pillow as a 'joke weapon' skin for the Double Sabers in Phantasy Star Online 2, the same weapons she weilds.
- Gene's hair and various outfits appear as limited time scratch card items in Phantasy Star Online 2.
- Gene's Stella Tears outfit was the first designed. The more modest Stella Innocent and Stella Memories outfits came afterwards.
- Gene has had 14 figurines made of her based on her various Stella outfits and beachwear.
- Gene is one of the most popular characters in the entire Phantasy Star Online 2 sub series. In Phantasy Star Online 2's ARKS Investigative Report 2017, Gene placed third in the most selected partner character, beating out even Matoi. She was the only character in the top 5 that had a limited-time event partner card, meaning not everyone had access to her.
