Adam

Not to be confused with Adam Hunter from Streets of Rage.

Adam is a reoccurring character in the Shining series, and personal mechanical soldier and assistant of Max.

Appearance

Adam is a unique white and light cream colored asymetrical robot. His head and left gun arm floats mysteriously apart from the rest of his body. His limbs are mismatched and sections of his mechanical body show through.

History

Adam was one of many robots created by the ancients of rune to serve as a mechanical soldier for Max and Kane alongside Chaos, their robotic leader. They were all placed into stasis and scheduled to awaken at the time Dark Dragon vowed to return. Upon awakening they were attacked by Dark Sol, who destroyed all the robots bar Adam and Chaos. Kane made sure Max could escape, but they both were injured, with Max losing his memories of his past and ending up washed up on the shores of Guardiana and Kane, alongside Chaos, forced to serve him.

Adam later is reunited with Max after Runefaust and Darksol make their move to revive Dark Dragon. He is placed in charge of helping Max create the Chaos Breaker, and joins him and the Shining Force in their quest. On their way however, Chaos appears to obstruct them with a desire to kill Max. Adam bravely steps in the way, but is beaten back by his former commander. This isn't enough to destroy him however, and he continues to aid Max in battle against Chaos, Darksol and Dark Dragon.

When Max uses the Chaos Breaker to seal Dark Dragon, he uses Egress to save his friends. Adam remains behind and sinks into the ocean with Max, Dark Dragon and the Chaos Breaker. At the end of the game we see Adam is alive and well, being talked to by a farmer of a distant land who suggests he helps work on the land with him. Max is revealed to be still alive, and, in the Japanese version, asks if Adam wishes to stay with him and farm.

Later in Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict, Max and Adam discover that Mishaela, one of Darksol's most loyal disciples is still alive and plotting. They, alongside a new Shining Force consisting of Mead, a centaur knight, Paige, a hobbit warrior, Sonette, an elven archer and Rideon, a dwarven gladiator pursue Mishaela and her men to slay them. When Lynx, a loyal demon servant blocks their path, Max and Ridion stays behind to fight them and sends Adam and the younger warriors to pursue Mishaela.

Adam fires off a shot, but Mishaela and her men manage to dodge it. In retaliation she sets Eiku on Adam who unleashes Blaze magic, causing the robot severe damage. Max and Ridion who are given the slip by Lynx appear and continue to pursue Mishaela, whilst Mead, Paige and Sonette are given the task of rescuing Adam.

Adam is brought to Hassan, a nearby port town, where he is fixed up by the village elder. Despite now functional, Adam isn't able to fight anymore, but his inner core will slowly repair him thanks to the repairs the village elder made on it. From here on he takes the role Nova had in the original Shining Force, or Lowe had in Shining Force Gaiden, acting as a mouthpiece, decision maker and non combatant guide to Ian.

In Shining Soul both Adam and the fixed up Chaos make an appearance, aiding a new Shining Force against the Dark Dragon in Prontis village. When spoken to they give basic advice. They unearth the Chaos Breaker during the player's journey, allowing the player to defeat Dark Dragon.

Trivia

  • Adam is the only member of the Shining Force outside of Max to not escape from the Dark Dragon, choosing to remain with Max when Max uses his Egress magic to save everyone else.
  • Much of Adam's dialogue is severely cut down in the English version of Shining Force, including the explaination that Max and Kane's ancients origins, more information about Dark Sol, Max losing his memory and that Chaos was Kane's Adam equivalent sent to help him, only to be corrupted like Kane by Dark Sol. The English version merely has the lines "I am Adam, a robot soldier. I will show you how to create the Chaos Breaker." and "Stop! You are Chaos. You have been reprogrammed by Darksol. Revert to original function."
  • Adam has the second largest defensive stat in Shining Force just after Guntz. However due to him being the second from last possible character to join and joining severely underlevelled, many players are unlikely to put the time to raise Adam to reach those levels before the battle with Dark Dragon.
  • Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon has a much easier way to help raise Adam up, thanks to the addition of Mawlock and his card system either by allowing Adam to attack twice per turn(, increasing the range of Adam's attacks or being able to attack with the enemies attack stat rather than his own.
  • Adam also reveals a little about Max and Kane's parents in Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, revealing they were biological scientists who were involved in the Dark Dragon's creations. However, realising the damage Dark Dragon would cause, they sealed him away, their father losing his life in the process.
  • Shining Force Neo, Shining Force EXA and Shining Ark all have robot characters named after Adam, although these appear to be different beings.
