- Sega sell the remainder of their arcade shares to Genda in January following the devastating impact of the arcades from COVID-19. The famous Club Sega in Akihabara, Tokyo has it's Sega branding removed following this sale.
- Shenmue the Animation launches in February
- Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is released in April, and becomes the highest-grossing video game film at the time
- Rieko Kodama (7th Dragon, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, etc) passes away on May 9, age 58. Her passing is not announced until October 27.
- Bernie Stolar, former President of Sega of America, passes away on June 22, age 75
- Astro City Mini V launches on July 28
- Sega Genesis Mini 2 launches on October 27
- Yuji Naka (Sonic the Hedgehog, NiGHTS, Billy Hatcher, etc) is arrested for insider trading on November 17. He is rearrested on December 7 for more insider trading.
