- Wes Craven cameoed in the first four films (though his role in the fourth film is deleted), but this was the only named role.
- The name and wardrobe are in reference to Craven's earlier creation: the serial killer character Freddy Krueger, who in the first film is referred to simply as Fred Krueger in most scenes, only rarely being called Freddy. This serves as a reference to his other horror franchise, A Nightmare On Elm Street. The iconic hat and striped sweater reappears in Scream 2 in Hallie McDaniel's closet.
