Fetterlings are sentient chains under the service of Maafa. Once they get a hold of their victims, they take them to the bone ships.

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky
A group of them ambush the Midfolk on their way back to the Thicket. A day later they invade the Thicket. When at Nyame's Palace, Tristan Strong and his companions see Nyame restrained by giant fetterlings.
Tristan Strong Destroys the World
The Maafa uses fetterlings and other iron monsters to communicate with Tristan when the boy talks to him about the Shamble Man.
Trivia
- Fetterlings represent the chains and shackles used on African American slaves.[1]
- Larger fetterlings are known as bosslings.
