Eggs are items that can be found throughout both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, and come in a few different types. In both games, eggs can either be eaten for health or thrown as weapons.
There are few times eggs can be found and picked up off the map, but otherwise they are found by killing snakes which drop them, or randomly lain by chickens. There are four different types of eggs; from most common to rare, there are white, brown, gold, and rotten. In The Mercenaries minigames of RE4 and RE5, chickens will also drop eggs when killed.
In Resident Evil 4, all eggs take up one space in the attache case. When equipped in the Inventory Menu, Leon will playfully throw the egg up and down in one hand. Inflicting any sort of damage to an egg before picking it up will cause it to break and be irretrievable. Although they cause no damage when used as weapons on regular enemies, eggs will knock a crow out of the air, and even kill chickens. Although non-lethal, eggs may cause a Ganado to flinch when hit, allowing players to kick them. They also cause them to fall off ladders and cliffs, and cause the torch-wielding Ganados to burn themselves. Eggs will also kill the villager driving the truck, the cultists driving the large drill, and the cultists on the lava room's dragon statues.
Eggs cannot break boxes, barrels, Blue Medallions, bird nests, locks, lanterns, the sticks holding the wells open, the wine painting, the blocks in the clock tower, the wooden planks at the mine cart, searchlights, Jack Krauser's robots, thrown weapons, or other eggs. They also cannot knock down jewels, ring bells, or activate switches and buttons. However, they can break glass, boarded-up windows, tripwires, and bear traps. Also, if Leon throws too many eggs at Luis, he will kill Leon. Eggs also bounce off ceilings.

Resident Evil 5
In Resident Evil 5, eggs are organized into stacks of 5 per kind, stored in one space in the inventory system. Gold, white, and brown eggs have a chance of stunning an enemy when thrown at them and do 300 damage each. Rotten eggs will kill regular Majinis and prevent plaga spawns no matter how much health they have.
Eggs can only heal the person using them, unlike herbs and sprays, which can heal both characters. Throwing eggs at your partner will stun him/her if Friendly Fire is on. Eating rotten eggs will cause damage, and will send the player straight into Dying status on Professional difficulty.
Killing a Majini with an egg unlocks the "Egg on your Face" award, while collecting all four kinds of eggs unlocks the "Egg Hunt" award.

Further notes
In Resident Evil 4 remake, if players throw eggs at Ashley or the Merchant, they will react with annoyance.
In Resident Evil 5, there is a "Rotten Egg exploit" (which works on all systems). The method is as follows: one player gives a rotten egg to another via online play. The person who received the egg can quit the game and save. The person who gave the egg cannot. You can keep doing this until all your inventory spaces are filled. A full inventory of rotten eggs can subsequently be sold for ₦90,000. This exploit can also be performed offline via split screen co-op mode, but requires two gamertags on the same console.
