Portugal /ˈpɔrtʃəɡəl/, officially the Portuguese Republic (Portuguese: República Portuguesa), is a country on the Iberian Peninsula. Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal is the westernmost country of mainland Europe and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal.
Religion in Portugal
Potugal has been an officially secular country without an official statereligion since the time of the Portuguese First Republic (1910 - 1926). Religious freedom is guaranteed by law.
The majority of the people in Portugal are nominally Roman Catholics, accounting for 84.5% of the population. Other Christian denominations represent 2.2% of the population. Most Portuguese national holidays have a Catholic or Christian origin.
Religious minorities present in Portugal include Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Baha'i. About 0.1% of the population are Buddhists.
