Sigma 14 was a star in Deep Space with its own extensive exoplanetary system. Some of the planetoids contained in the system were S3 Planets.
The Sigma 14 system had asteroids and at least fourteen moons and three planets, on one of which Lister and Rimmer once spent a week marooned.
History
Three million years into Deep Space, the JMC mining spaceship Red Dwarf passed by the system. At the same time, the crew of the ship were forced to evacuate when the ship's computer, Holly, apparently detected five approaching black holes in the system.
Lister and Rimmer took a Starbug shuttle, and Kryten and Cat took a Blue Midget shuttle, with the plan of rendezvousing on the planetoid Sigma 14-D, a designated "safe planetoid".
The plan didn't go so well, since Starbug was hit by a flaming meteorite and did a nose-dive into a desolate, snowy S3 planetoid that was not Sigma 14-D. Unable to contact the others, Lister and Rimmer were forced to burn everything on Starbug to keep warm enough to stay alive. Lister was also forced to eat revolving things, such as dog food and a pot noodle. The pair also learned some interesting things about each other as they spent a week marooned.
When Starbug didn't turn up at Sigma 14-D, Kryten and Cat began looking for it through the system with Blue Midget. They eventually found Starbug, after they had scoured the system with Psi-Scans, across fourteen moons and two planets. Cat had been so worried, he hadn't buffed his shoes in two days.
It turned out that there was no black holes in the system, and Holly had in fact seen grit on the scanner scope. ("Marooned", Series III)
Trivia
- The marooned planetoid remains unnamed and undesignated, although it was certainly within the Sigma 14 system. It may have been intended to be Sigma 14-E, the next planetoid out from the "safe" one, Sigma 14-D. Although the marooned planetoid was freezing and desolate it could still sustain human life. albeit barely, so must have been still relatively close to its star.
