Sonoza

This article is about a villain turned Extra Hero in Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.

Sonoza (ソノザ, Sonoza) is a member of the Noto, with the mantle of the Kage Style, and one of the former antagonists of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers who transforms into what was called Transformed Sonoza (ソノザ変身体, Sonoza Henshintai) by the Donbrothers production crew and official material.^[1]

History

Donbrothers

Sonoza was one of the Noto trio alongside Sonoi and Sononi, tasked with the elimination of Hitotsuki - monsters born from humans with excessive desires. Haruka Kitou initially mistook him for Don Momotaro, only to be dismissed.

Although Sonoza treated the Donbrothers as enemies, his wish to comprehend human emotions such as sadness or happiness led to his association with Haruka. He found her manga interesting to read, an useful tool for him to experience real feelings. When they were not fighting, Sonoza took the chance to examine and evaluate Haruka's manga stories, acting as an editor of sorts for the girl. Due to their periodic fraternization, Sonoza slowly began to understand human emotions, being able to smile and laugh in a more natural way than he had been doing before.

Sonoza's link to Haruka, together with Sonoi and Sononi's own to the other Donbrothers, caught the Noto Council's attention. They sent their inspectors and eventually executioners Sonoya and Sonona to kill Sonoza and his comrades for insubordination. Sonoza and co took the opportunity to join the Donbrothers and managed to, after some difficulties, beat back their pursuers.

By the end of the series, he had chosen to work as Haruka's full - time editor, helping her write more manga stories.

Donbrothers vs Zenkaiger

Some time after the Donbrothers' final battle, Taro Momoi had stepped down as a leader in favour of Jiro Momotani. Thanks in part to him, Sononza and Haruka had become accomplished individuals in the manga industry, but they were tired of being Donbrothers under his rigid leadership.

After Taro died fighting Kikaiki, Sonoza made a speech about the former leader, calling both himself and the others out for having been selfish. This motivated them to embrace their roles as Donbrothers again.

Sonoza helped his team and the Zenkaigers defeat Kikaiki and Kashiwa Mochi World. Afterwards, he kept his job as Haruka's editor.

Personality

Sonoza is an eerie, stright - laced, mentally unstable man who laughs and cries out of place. This is because of his interest in human emotions, as he tries to learn about them by imitating certain reactions. Whenever he attempts to force a laugh, a smile or a cry, he asks random bystanders if what he does is "correct", which more often than not comes across as unsettling for them.

However, once he has read one of Haruka Kitou's manga, he is engrossed with it, treating it as an useful tool in his exploration of human feelings. Out of his volition, he becomes Haruka's "Chief Editor" for her new mangas and her confidant, even after knowing that she is one of the Donbrothers. Sonoza's time as an "Editor" subsequently makes him understand humanity more and more, as he ends up a better person from it. Despite being enemies, Sonoza takes his "Editor" work seriously, criticizing Haruka whenever she writes bland storylines, but also never forgetting to encourage her to do better.

Sonoza is more of a pragmatist than Sonoi, as he thinks there is nothing wrong with fighting dirty as long as it results in a win. He dismisses the latter's dissatisfaction from exploiting Taro's weakness as frivolous, deeming it a valid strategy as any other. In spite of this, Sonoza is not without honour, as he has reprimanded both himself and the Donbrothers for having let Taro die alone, which has proven instrumental in their taking up arms once more.

• Sonoi: Sonoza treats Sonoi like the group leader and often defers most decisions to him. There are hints that he finds Sonoi's honorable tendencies grating and, like Sononi, becomes visibly uncomfortable when Sonoi displays the Taro-esque side-effects of his new Kyokatai form. Despite their differences, Sonoza cares about him greatly, and is shocked upon his death.
• Sononi: There is at least mutual respect between the two of them, as they're often seen working together. They show a mutual concern for Sonoi as the show goes on.

Despite being enemies on the battlefield, Sonoza sees their on-field opposition as separate from his stint as her "Chief Editor," serving as a confidant to the girl on his down-time. In Naoki Shiina's timeline, their relationship is much worse, since they have become mortal enemies. In the end, Haruka's manga has changed Sonoza for the better, and the duo have kept their "Editor - writer" bond well after having made peace.

Portrayal

• Sonoza is portrayed by Shinnosuke Takahashi (タカハシ シンノスケ, Takahashi Shin'nosuke). While transformed, his suit actor is Riichi Seike (清家 利一, Seike Riichi).

Design

• Transformed Sonoza is an homage to The Kagestar, which was produced by Toei.

Etymology

• Sonoza's name is a play on "sono san", meaning "part three".

Notes

• Sonoza is the first Noto General to visit the Cafe Donbura.
• Sonoza was meant to die during mid-season, but writer Toshiki Inoue was amazed by the Noto Trio actors’ performance that he decided to rewrite the characters’ fates and renegotiate their actors’ contracts in order to keep them during the rest of the series.^[2]
