The Name Rater is a title used by various characters, usually old men. They first appear in Generation I.
Description
The Name Rater changes the nickname of a player's Pokémon free of charge. He refuses to rename Pokémon received from non-playable characters or from trades, as the Pokémon's OT and trainer ID number has to match the player's. However, from Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield onward, the Name Rater can change the name of a Pokémon traded to the player once if the original trainer has not given it a nickname.
Appearances
There is a Name Rater in nearly all games of the core series. There is no Name Rater in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet as the player can change their Pokémon's nickname from the summary.
