In Meet the Cars, Carlo Maserati's biography suggests he is based on the real-life Carlo Maserati, the eldest of the Maserati brothers.

The fountain in Carsoli commemorates the seven Maserati brothers – Carlo, Bindo, Alfieri I, Alfieri II, Mario, Ettore, and Ernesto.
