Cameos, in-jokes, re-used animation, and other trivia from Lightyear.
References to previous Toy Story films
- Buzz's first observation of T'kani Prime is captured as a POV shot through his helmet.
- In his initial mission log, Buzz's description of T'kani Prime mirrors Toy Buzz's first description of Andy's room.
- Alisha jokingly plays music while Buzz lectures Featheringhamstan, prompting an unamused Buzz to ask "You're mocking me, aren't you?"
- Buzz tells a doubtful Featheringhamstan "I'm Buzz Lightyear, I'm always sure!", a line delivered by Utility Belt Buzz while navigating the air ducts in Al's apartment building.
- A button in the XL-15's cockpit reads "Falling with style".
- After failing to reach Star Command, Buzz asks himself "Why don't they answer?"
- Buzz initially mistakes the person inside "Zurg" for his father, a nod to the Star Wars-parody "I am your father" scene in Toy Story 2.
- Buzz's final mission log is star-dated "4071". Likewise, Toy Buzz's first mission log in Andy's room is "4072".
- The Space Rangers' new spaceship loosely resembles Toy Buzz's packaging design.
- At the start of the movie, text reads "In 1995, a boy named Andy went to go see a movie. This is that movie."
- When Buzz tells Featheringhamstan: "You will not speak unless spoken to.", this references the scene in Toy Story 3 in which Buzz (having been reset to demo mode by Lotso) goes over the overnight protocol to the rest of Andy's toys after they've been imprisoned in the Caterpillar Room at Sunnyside Daycare.
Cameos
- An ERIC robot at the Star Command base bears the same color scheme as WALL-E.
- A constellation of Luxo, Jr. appears during Buzz's first test flight. The same constellation appears at the very beginning of Toy Story 2.
- During the "Mission Perpetual" montage, Alisha and Kiko's son is briefly seen playing with a Transitron toy.
- In the same scene, a drawing of a Little Green Man is visible on the wall behind Alisha.
- The Pizza Planet Truck appears during Buzz and Sox's escape from Star Command security.
- Scream Canisters are among the weaponry at the Star Command storage depot.
- The abandoned mine's snack machine contains Poultry Palace's "castle cookies."
- Models of BURN-E and a Little Green Man appear on a shelf in Commander Burnside's office.
- Coincidentally, director Angus MacLane's first two short films as director were BURN•E, a mini-movie for WALL•E, and Small Fry, a short film also in the Toy Story franchise.
Other Trivia
- Lightyear was released theatrically in standard and IMAX formats on June 17th, 2022. The film marks Pixar's first worldwide theatrical release since Onward, after Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were released as Disney+ exclusives.
- Star Command's IVAN navigation units are voiced by Mary McDonald-Lewis, the voice of General Motors' OnStar navigation system.
- Buzz "repairs" a malfunctioning IVAN unit by blowing into its connectors, a common dust-removal method for Nintendo game cartridges.
- Angus MacLane's father calculated the course-correction math Buzz uses on his first test flight. [1] Although Buzz only wrote a small portion on the XL-01's windshield, the full equation is more complex.
- A Mandalorian jetpack from the Star Wars franchise appears at the Junior Patrol's base.
- Darby wears a Space Ranger suit with the nametag "Tempus," a nod to one of Buzz Lightyear's original names, Tempus from Morph.
- The Armadillo's in-flight computer emits the Apple Macintosh startup sound before rebooting.
- DERIC bears the Spanish phrase "El Riesgo Siempre Vive" (meaning "the risk always lives"). This is a nod to Aliens (1986), wherein the same phrase is emblazoned on Pvt. Vasquez's armor.
- The Zyclops robots pronounce Zurg's name as "B'zzzurg," subtly foreshadowing his true identity.[2]
- This is the final Pixar film to use the 2011 Disney logo. A brand new Disney logo created specifically for the studio's 100th anniversary debuted at the 2022 D23 Expo on September 9, 2022, and would later made its Pixar film debut on their next film Elemental.
- This is the final Pixar film to use the full 2011 Disney logo as a closing logo.
- This is the second Pixar film to be released on June 17, after 2016's Finding Dory.
- This is not the first time Buzz Lightyear is voiced by an actor other than Tim Allen. The list includes:
- Pat Fraley (Toy Story Treats, video games, attractions)
- Patrick Warburton (Buzz Lightyear of Star Command)
- Javier Fernandez-Peña (Spanish mode in Toy Story 3)
- Mike MacRae (video games)
- Corey Burton (Disney on Ice)
- When the movie was announced, many people were thrown into great confusion over it. This can be largely attributed to the human character and the toy sharing the same name, which led many people to believe the human Buzz Lightyear's voice actor, Chris Evans, would replace the toy Buzz Lightyear's voice actor, Tim Allen, to become the new voice of the character. Later, Disney clarified on Twitter that this was not the case.
