Toolajee was an Indian pirate and the half-brother of Pirate Lord Sri Sumbhajee.
Biography
Little is known of Toolajee's early life, other than he lived in India and was the half-brother of Sri Sumbhajee, an Indian pirate who became the Pirate Lord of the Indian Ocean. Toolajee spent most of his youth living in Sri Sumbhajee's palace on the island of Suvarnadurg. When he reached the age of seven, Toolajee tried to poison Sri Sumbhajee a number of times because he wanted to be a Pirate Lord himself. But once Captain Jack Sparrow found out, Sumbhajee was proud of Toolajee and said that when Sumbhajee died that Toolajee would inherit his Piece of Eight, granting him the title and power of the Pirate Lord of the India Ocean, as long as the young boy stopped the attempts to poison him. Sri Sumbhajee also announced that Toolajee would be able to come on all his adventures with him. Afterwards, Toolajee was satisfied.[2]
Behind the scenes
- Toolajee first appeared in Legends of the Brethren Court: The Turning Tide.[2]
- While unconfirmed, Toolajee may be based on the real-world pirate Tulaji Angre, the son of the Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre. However, Toolajee and Tulaji Angre cannot be the same person because the timeline established in the Pirates of the Caribbean films as of Dead Men Tell No Tales sets the events of the book Legends of the Brethren Court: The Turning Tide, where Toolajee is introduced as a young boy who was about seven years old, around 1716-1717. The book establishes that Toolajee's father died of old age shortly before his birth. In real-world history, Tulaji Angre's father Kanhoji died in 1729, at least thirteen years after the events of The Turning Tide and at least twenty-five years after Toolajee's birth.
