Third Mate

"Congratulations on your apparent soul-mate discovery, but it's not something we all need to witness. Savvy?"
"Sorry, Jack. Can I introduce ye to bosun and third mate of the
Fleur, Billy Turner."
Jack Sparrow and Arabella Smith[src]

A Third Mate was a high position on the deck of a ship. The position was customarily the ship's fourth-in-command below the captain, first and second mate. Some of the main duties a third mate had was to retain some control over the sailors, navigate the ship and respond to any emergencies. Other duties vary depending on the type of ship, its crewing, and other factors.

William Turner Sr., known as "Billy Turner" in his youth, was a notable third mate aboard the Fleur de la Mort, a pirate ship under the command of Captain Laura Smith.[1] Third Mate Edward Tomlin served under First Mate Jack Sparrow and Captain Nathaniel Bainbridge aboard the East India Trading Company merchant vessel Fair Wind.[2]
