"I'm afraid, sir, Tortuga is the only free port left in these waters."
"A pirate port is what you mean. Well, I'm sorry. An honest sailor is what I am. I make my living fair and I sleep well each night, thank you." - ―Bellamy and Quartermaster
A port was a maritime facility located on a coast or shore, comprising one or more harbors, wharves or loading areas, where ships could dock, load, transfer and discharge cargo and passengers to or from land. Although usually situated on a sea coast or estuary, ports could also be found far inland, such as Singapore, which access the sea via rivers or canals. Ports were also often densely populated settlements that provide the labor for processing and handling goods and related services for the ports. Many port cities have experienced dramatic multi-ethnic and multicultural changes throughout their histories, with some ports having an important military role with soldiers in wartime.
History
By the Age of Piracy, of all the islands in the Caribbean, only the pirate port of Tortuga was considered a free port.[1] Asia had some of the world's largest and busiest ports, such as Singapore[2] and the Chinese port of Shanghai.[3] Founded by the English, Port Royal was a bustling harbor town situated on Jamaica.[4][5][6] Cádiz was a notable port in Spain.[7]
