Greyhounds were a class of medium-sized sloops in the service of the British Royal Navy. These ships were standardized to have sixteen cannons, with ten below deck and the remainder above. Designed for a blend of speed and firepower, these ships were some of the most notorious protectors of Port Royal and other installations of the British Empire throughout the Caribbean. They were known to be captained by veterans of the guard, with a fierce crew kept in line by sergeants loyal to none but the crown. A specialty of this class was firing chain shot to de-mast their opponents before swiftly moving in for the kill. The designation of this class followed the tradition of British Navy ships to be named after animals.
