Events of the Novels

Virgins

At a tavern with an attached brothel, Mathieu takes a prostitute by force in the tavern yard in front of many people, including Jamie and Ian.

When Jamie and Ian return later to the same tavern, Mathieu is with the brown-haired prostitute Jamie had been looking for. Jamie shouts at Mathieu to let go of the girl, but Mathieu ignores him. Jamie takes out a pistol and fires at Mathieu and all hell breaks loose. Mathieu turns on Jamie and Ian, who has come to Jamie's aid, and Jamie is overcome by his rage and throttles Mathieu. As Jamie's rage dissipates, he turns to the girl only to find that she is dead with a bullet hole in her breast, most likely from the gun that he fired.

Name

• Mathieu is a French form of Matthew,^[1] the English form of Ματθαιος (Matthaios), which was a Greek form of the Hebrew name מַתִּתְיָהוּ (Mattityahu) meaning "gift of Yahweh(God)".^[2]
