Commander was a commissioned officer rank in the Planetary Union. A commander ranked above Lieutenant Commander and below Captain. Commander was the lowest rank in the Command section of the Union.
Commanders typically served in the position of first officer aboard a ship, where they supervised the performance of the other section chiefs and aided the ship's captain.

- Kelly Grayson: First Officer of the USS Orville since September 2419.[5]
- Steve Newton (alternate timeline): Commander on the Orville from September 2419 until his death in the Battle of Earth in February 2421.[6][4]
- Talla Keyali: Lieutenant Commander Keyali briefly assumed the role of Commander and First Officer of the Orville in 2422 as part of a deception for the Janisi.[7]
