The Chak'tal were an alien species bordering Krill space. The Chak'tal are only known to the Planetary Union from a single battle with the Krill, observed by Captain Ed Mercer in late 2420, which was part of the Krill-Chak'tal conflict.
According to Teleya, the Chak'tal "are savage and do not retreat and they never leave survivors."[1]
Biology
Chak'tal were a humanoid species with red eyes, skin of various shades of brown with blue-gray splotches on the head, a prominent ridge on the crown of the skull, pointed ears, and a short, stubby nose.[1] Their eyes were sensitive to infrared light, allowing them to see at night, and they had a highly developed sense of smell.[2] While searching for Captain Ed Mercer and Teleya in the forest of an unnamed habitable planet, they actively sniffed the air for their scent.[1]
Relations with the Krill
Chak'tal entered a state of open conflict with the Krill after the destruction of a colony during Krill expansion into their sector. Teleya added, "[The area] is ours by divine right, but they do not see this."[1]
In September or October 2420, several Chak'tal warships destroyed a Krill destroyer and three Marauder-class fighters just 2.5 light years from Planetary Union space.

- Despite the spelling, the name Chak'tal is pronounced SHAK.tal (/ʃak.tʰal/).
- The book The Guide to The Orville speculates that the Chak'tal evolved from a lupine or canine species.[2]
