Soloman Syed (Hindi: सोलोमन सय्यद) was an Indian seaman aboard the Obra Dinn during her last voyage in 1802. He caught a fatal lung disease and succumbed to it.
Story and fate
Syed was a seaman and was responsible for the ship's manual labor. He was first seen loading cargo onto the ship in Falmouth and witnessed the accidental death of seaman Samuel Peters.[1]
Later, off the coast of Portugal, he and a fellow crewmate, seaman Renfred Rajub, died of a lung disease that they had caught in a lascar house back in England.[2] Surgeon Henry Evans could only rule out consumption as the cause.[3]
The East India Company insurance assessment of the Obra Dinn incident awarded Syed's estate £15 in outstanding wages.[4]
Identification
Syed can be identified during A Bitter Cold, part 1, when his compatriot, seaman William Wasim, addresses him by name, trying to get him to drink.
