Bore

Bore (穿 (せん) Sen?) is a technique that allows the caster to open a vent ( (ふう) (けつ) fūketsu?), a direct connection between the Near Shore and Yomi. Doing so allows ayakashi, shinki, humans, or gods to pass through.

Casting Sequence

Structurally and visually, the incantation and casting sequence are quite similar to Rend.

O band of fiends treading upon sacred land! With the Kokki, I pierce you! Bore!
(Official English dub)

After reciting the incantation, Kofuku lowers Kokki so that it points to or touches the spot where she wishes to open a vent. Kokki may be held completely closed,[1] completely open,[2] or partially open so that only a few of the ribs are fanned out. Spreading the fan further is implied to create a larger or longer-lasting vent, since Kofuku has made this adjustment in response to Izanami sealing off Yomi's exit.[1]

Restrictions

  • Kofuku's bad luck usually causes a vent opening to escalate into a "storm," a large gathering of ayakashi that is considered very dangerous. For this reason, Daikoku shows resistance to being used for this spell and they typically avoid it unless the situation is considered dire.

Usages

Kofuku opens vent-7
  • Bore has only been used by Kofuku wielding Kokki. It is likely that the ability is unique to this duo.
    • It is first used when Hiyori requests that Kofuku protect Yato from Bishamon. However, the casting sequence is not used in this instance.[2]
    • Kofuku uses Kokki in order to kill a cockroach, accidentally opening a vent in the process. This usage also did not require the incantation.[3]
    • Kofuku uses the incantation to open a vent for Bishamon and her shinki to rescue Yato from Yomi. However, she later uses it again simply by saying "Bore!" and pointing Kokki to the ground, omitting most of the incantation.[1]

Adaptation Notes

  • Although this technique exists in the manga,[4] the name and incantation are only used in the anime.
