Ursula

Ursula (ウルスラ Ursura) is one of the main characters of the NO\NAME manga series, written by Rafal Jaki and illustrated by Machine Gamu. She works for the Nordic Naming Bureau and is partnered with Ralf Olsen. Her name gives her the power to transform into a giant bear.

Appearance

Ursula Full Body

Ursula's distinctive outfit features a utility trench coat, colored in a fading blue that is noticeably oversized for her human form. The coat's large, voluminous sleeves have zippers on the armhole areas, allowing Ursula to open them freely, often exposing her side boob or the sides of her body. On the shoulder part of the sleeves, a large yellow "BANG" is boldly printed as a design element.

Her footwear is simple—a pair of slippers. Ursula has short gray hair, styled with fringes that extend past her eyes. She parts her hair from the right, covering her left eye, and typically wears her hair in buns on both sides, leaving the rest to hang down.

Upon transforming into a bear, Ursula's coat adjusts to fit her much larger bear body snugly. In this form, she also wears black gloves with exposed fingers.

Personality

Ursula is a determined and assertive woman who works as an agent for the Nordic Naming Bureau. She has the Name Power "Bear," which allows her to transform into a massive bear, demonstrating her strength and ferocity. Ursula is not afraid to use her power to intimidate others, as seen when she confronts Vivica, Kára's mother, to gather information about Kára's whereabouts.[2]

Ursula can be quick-tempered, particularly when she feels wronged or manipulated.[3] She becomes very angry when she realizes Bodil used his Name Power to control her and Ralf.[3] This anger is mirrored in her reaction to Kára's story about Bodil's abusive control over her, where Ursula's rage leads her to call Bodil a rapist and express a desire to kill him.[4]

Despite her fierce demeanor, Ursula has moments of humor, as shown by her playful interactions with Ralf, such as when she jokingly calls him "Wolfie Boy."[5] She also shows a lighter side when she expresses her love for honey beer at the Chillbrewing Shop and her playful grumbling about not getting to paw-wrestle with Ralf's summoned wolf.[5]

Ursula can also be compassionate and protective. She apologizes to Kára for having to kill her in self-defense to save Ralf[6], and later, when Vivica collapses in grief, Ursula catches her[7] and reassures her, showing a softer side to her otherwise tough exterior. She tries to comfort Vivica despite being spat on and accused of killing Kára, indicating a level of empathy and a desire to protect the vulnerable.[7]

Plot

Background

Ursula worked as an agent for the Nordic Naming Bureau. She had the power to transform into a massive bear, known as her "Bear" name power. She partnered with Ralf Olsen, who had the "Wolf Commander" name power. However, beyond these details, her origin and background remain unknown.

Relationships

Ralf Olsen

Ralf Olsen and Ursula were agents from the Nordic Naming Bureau working together to find Kára, Bodil's missing wife. Their relationship was mainly professional: Ralf did most of the interviewing and investigating, while Ursula helped and supported him. When they faced hostility from Bodil, who used his Name Power to control them, Ursula got very angry. Although they were initially confused by Bodil's power, they stayed focused on finding the missing child.

As they continued their investigation, they eventually found Vivica, Kára's mother, who initially transformed into a fortress to protect herself but was later intimidated by Ursula, who transformed into a massive bear. Ursula and Ralf confronted Vivica to learn more about Kára and her situation. When they finally found Kára, she revealed that Bodil had forced her into having a child and controlled her decisions through his Name Power. This revelation deeply angered Ursula, who called Bodil a rapist and wanted to kill him. Ursula's emotions led her to take drastic actions, including shooting Kára to protect Ralf when Kára became violent. Ralf was saved by his wolf Tvá, and Kára was killed in the confrontation. Ursula, though shocked, apologized to Ralf for her actions, and Ralf thanked her for her swift intervention.

Following the incident, Vivica expressed her despair and anger towards Ralf and Ursula. Despite Ralf's reassurances that Bodil would face justice and that the child would be protected, Vivica remained distraught, accusing them of failing to secure her daughter's safety and predicting that Bodil would continue to have his way. The situation was complicated further by Vivica's reaction and the subsequent need for urgent action by Ralf.

Abilities

Name Power

  • Bear ( (くま) Kuma): Ursula, who possesses the Name Power "Bear," can transform into a massive bear when she uses her Name Power. This transformation grants her significant physical prowess, allowing her to tower over others and exert a powerful presence. In her bear form, Ursula can physically dominate and intimidate others. For instance, when she faced Vivica, Ursula used her Name Power to intimidate Vivica, who had transformed into a fortress. Ursula's bear form was large enough to overwhelm Vivica's fortress, causing her to collapse in intimidation. Ursula’s ability in her bear form emphasizes her physical strength and intimidating presence.

Physical Prowess

Outside of her Name Power, Ursula's physical prowess is notable, but it is not her primary means of influence. Her physical strength and capability in combat are enhanced when she uses her Name Power, allowing her to perform feats such as lifting and throwing opponents. However, without her Name Power, her physical abilities are standard and not highlighted as a separate aspect.

Etymology

The name "Ursula" comes from the Latin word "ursa," which means "bear." It is a smaller form of "Ursa," meaning "little bear" or "little she-bear." The name is historically important and is often linked to Saint Ursula, a famous British Christian saint and martyr. It became popular in the Middle Ages and is still used in many cultures today.
