Food items are needed to feed the player's pets in Nintendogs and Nintendogs + Cats.
Pets will become hungry after a period of time or after the player finishes a walk/contest. Pets must be fed when they are hungry. There are four levels of hunger: Full, Normal, Hungry, and Famished.
If a pet is Famished, it cannot be entered in any competitions. On the other hand, full pets are not likely to eat any food offered to them.
In Nintendogs + Cats the player can change the bowl that food or drinks are to be served in. This is done by clicking on the name of the item and then clicking on arrows to change the type of the bowl.

Treats
Treats don't do much to quench a pet's hunger, with its main purpose being to reward dogs. If a dog did a trick or obeyed a command on a walk, a treat should be given.
While any treat will work for a pet, some treats are more effective than others. In Nintendogs + Cats, the more expensive treats can help a pet learn behaviors and tricks faster.
