Meltan

Meltan is a species of Pokémon. It is a Steel type Mythical Pokémon introduced in the seventh generation games, It debuted as a part of a mysterious spawning Pokémon in Pokémon Go that transformed into Ditto and was later confirmed to appear in Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!

Physiology & Behavior

Meltan is a small Pokémon with a silvery body of liquid metal. Its head resembles a golden hexagonal nut with small black sphere floating inside. This sphere serves as its eye. It has a red tail that resembles an electrical wire with two tiny protrusions at the end.

Its body can corrode metal, which it then absorbs. Meltan can generate electricity using the metal it absorbs, and then fire it from its eye. According to Professor Willow, Meltan has been described in ancient texts found in the same place as the Mystery Box, a mysterious item that attracts Meltan to its location when opened. Professor Willow also states that Meltan is said to be created from small shards when a Melmetal rusts and splits apart. Meltan is known to live in groups until the day comes where one strong Meltan absorbs the group to evolve into Melmetal.

It has also been seen working in packs. When provoked, it will spin its head, creating a sound that calls others of its own kind. This head-spinning can also be used as a sign of affection. The anime has also shown Meltan can be tamed if fed metal-like treats. Meltan can also multiple in numbers overtime as seen in the anime. Meltan is one of the smallest Pokémon, tying with Alolan Diglett and Klefki as the shortest Steel-type.

Reception

Meltan's surprise debut received widespread reaction, with fans trying to reason what exactly was occurring and whether or not it was an intentional aspect of the game or a bug. Many fans and some media outlets also offered their own theories regarding the character, as well as giving it fan names such as "Nutto" until the official name was revealed. It has since been cited as significantly helping Go's revenue growth for 2018, and one of the most important Pokémon in the franchise as a whole for how it ties Go to the main franchise games.
