The Hylian Shield is a recurring shield in The Legend of Zelda series, first appearing in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It is a sturdy metal shield depicting a red Loftwing flying towards the Triforce. The Hylian Shield is Link's most iconic shield, being wielded by him in most official artwork. The Hylian Shield let's Link block attacks and deflect projectiles and because it is made primarily of metal, the Hylian Shield won't burn up when exposed to fire unlike the wooden shields that Link tends get at the start of his adventures.

The Hylian Shield is usually one of the better shields Link can obtain during his adventures, surpassed only by magical shields like the Mirror Shield. It's very durable and won't easily break, however, it can be destroyed by some monsters like Like Like and Pikit that like to eat metal shields.

Appearance

The Hylian Shield is a blue and silver, metal heater shield with a wooden backing. The shield's crest depicts the Crimson Loftwing flying towards the Triforce.

Lore

The first Hylian Shield was created during the Era of the Sky by the dragon thunder god Lanayru (Dragon) and, imbued with the might of heroes, rendering it completely unbreakable. This Hylian Shield was wielded by the Hero of the Sky and followed him into legend. After Hyrule's unification, replicas of the shield became popular with Hylian knights allied with the royal family. The Bazaar in Hyrule Castle Town even offers a word of mouth discount for soldiers allied with the Royal Family.

Trivia

• The Hylian Shield's first named appearance was in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, however, Link's unnamed starting shield from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past bears a strong resemblance to it in official artwork.
