The Flipper, which first appeared as an unpredictable obstacle in Balloon Fight for the NES, was known to hang in mid-air and attack you, friends, and/or foes who make any contact with its bumper balls and occasionally cause accidents to anyone. This irksome item was also in Balloon Fight VS.
Later in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Flipper appears as a throwing item, along with a Balloon Fighter trophy. Unlike in Balloon Fight, the Flipper in Melee has dark yellow metallic single-piece rods instead of white, and the central bolt is now blue instead of red. If thrown, it is hung in air and made useful as a difficult obstacle for smashers trying to recover, but it can also do the same to the thrower.
Flipper has also been remade as a DSiWare game, released in North America on February 22, 2010.
