Ninjago will see something they have never seen before. But in order for that to happen, I need more souls.”

Souls are the fundamental essence of a being, creature, or thing, containing their identity and consciousness. Once a soul's physical form is destroyed or reaches its natural end, the soul in question will be sent to the Spectral Lands. Souls are often associated with soul energy, a vital life force that is tied to a range of abilities. It can be used to forge Prismatic Steel. Undisgraced or Uncursed Souls used to reside in the Departed Realm. However, following the Merge, they pass through the Spectral Lands to either transcend to a higher level of existence, be reincarnated or find eternal rest.

Nadakhan manage to steal the souls of various Elemental Masters to rebuilt Djinjago but the Ninja were freed by Jay and his new the Ninja Replacements.

Dragons Rising, Season 2

As Rox was unable to go out the Nether-Space during the Ritual of the Blood Moon without a sacrifice, she separated her soul from her body, projecting it out of the Nether-Space just before the gate closes.[2] While Rox's body remained in the Nether-Space, her soul took refuge in Jordana's body and started to possess the Imperian girl. During the months after the ritual, Jordana was fully possessed by Rox.

After Nokt successfully freed the remaining members of the Forbidden Five, Rox's soul was pulled back to her body, therefore freeing Jordana from her possession.

Dragons Rising, Season 3

When Arin traveled to the Spectral Lands to save Ras' life, Morro explained to him that the elixir from the Well of the Lost contains special properties which allow souls to move forward to an unknown form of existence, and that it also has the power to heal the living.

Once the Forbidden Five free Thunderfang, he betrayed them by devouring their souls. Thunderfang also devoured Lloyd's soul after realizing he was a Conduit of the Source Dragons. After Arin defeated him, all the souls he devoured were either returned to their living bodies or taken with him to the Spectral Lands, where he devoured four Soul Suckers and Morro to regain his power.

Trivia

  • Though the Underworld is another afterlife realm, it's different from the Cursed Realm and Departed Realm in that its inhabitants are simply undead beings rather than disembodied souls. For example, Samukai's spirit was only sent to the Departed Realm after his body was destroyed in "Weapons of Destiny."
  • Being imitations of the ninja, the evil ninja lacked souls and thus would not have gone to the Departed Realm upon destruction.[3]
  • The Overlord stands as the sole immortal entity in the Ninjago franchise, distinct from the mortal souls inhabiting the Realms of Creation. As shown in "A Sinister Shadow," the Overlord remains confined to his void, unable to access the mortal plane of existence and the world without taking on a physical form.
  • When a ghost from the Cursed Realm is destroyed, they reform in the Cursed Realm.
  • Nadakhan sketch 2
The Djinn Blade was a special weapon that was originally created in the realm of Djinjago. Upon impact, the blade had the ability to absorb the soul of its target, granting the wielder the power to command and utilize the soul.
    • The souls' host bodies are also absorbed, though an early concept for Skybound saw the Djinn Blade's victims' bodies remain outside the sword as lifeless husks.[4]
  • If the souls that were previously contained within a being possessed an element or elemental essence, they would be distinguished by the color that corresponded to the specific element or essence they possessed. For example, Wu's soul was represented by the color gold, which symbolized the elemental essence of Creation.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, Cryptor "must have a programmed soul like Zane and Pixal" which is what allowed him to be transported to the Departed Realm upon his destruction.[5] However, Zane went to the Digiverse upon his destruction.[6]
  • It's possible that P.I.X.A.L. went to the Departed Realm when she was deleted from Zane's hard drive in "On a Wish and a Prayer" before the events were undone in "The Way Back."[7]
  • The NPCs from Prime Empire most likely did not become Nindroids like Zane or P.I.X.A.L. if they traveled to the real world, but rather, their codes were turned into genetic materials, the opposite of how the ninja were able to enter Prime Empire by becoming codes.[8] This means that they may now also have a soul.
