Netflix

Netflix, Inc. is an American over-the-top media services provider.

In early 2010, Nickelodeon sold streaming rights to their Nickelodeon catalog to Netflix, when streaming became a new idea to the public. However, in May 2013, Nickelodeon and Hulu striked a new streaming deal, and months later Nickelodeon shows and movies were removed from Netflix and onto Hulu.

In early 2018, Nickelodeon looked to get back into the streaming service business as a third party using their new "studio model", where they would produce original content under their name and allow streaming companies to bid for distribution rights on select content in undisclosed deals. So far, Netflix is the only company that has bought exclusive distribution rights to Nickelodeon content, which began with the purchase of the first ever off-network Nicktoon Pinky Malinky. The upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series is one exception, with Netflix producing it in joint partnership with Nickelodeon after buying its rights before production started.

On November 13, 2019, it was announced that Netflix and Nickelodeon formed a multi-year deal to produce original animated feature films and television series, based both on Nickelodeon's library of characters as well as all-new IP.^[1] Many people have speculated that this deal was made in attempt to compete in kids entertainment with the launches of streaming services Disney+ and HBO Max in November 2019 and May 2020 respectively. Netflix later added several existing Nickelodeon properties to their streaming service in December 2019.
