Art is one of the five tritagonists of the movie, Monsters University.
Biography
Art is a fascinating beast with a dubious past—the epitome of the free spirit. By far the most eccentric member of the Oozma Kappas, Art bowls the opposition over with his special agility and wild-card behavior, sometimes literally. When it comes to this furry bundle of evil, nothing is scarier than the unpredictability.
He attends Monsters University and is a brother of the fraternity Oozma Kappa. Art is a New Age Philosophy major, and according to director Dan Scanlon, he is "that [weird] college guy you don't know anything about" and a student who is "Not quite sure what he should be... and we're not quite sure what he is either." He's gone to jail at least once, it's discovered. Art is the only named student in the movie without a last name since, for some reason, he lacks one.
When Mike and Sulley move into the Oozma Kappa fraternity residence at Monsters University, Art and his fellow fraternity members are introduced. Art also assists the two with their initiation. In the Toxicity Challenge, the first round of the Scare Games, Art truly wants to touch the stinging glow urchins that the participants are supposed to avoid. He ignores that reality but eventually comes to his senses as he scoops up a significant amount and his body swells up in discomfort.
When the squad is speaking with Mike on the campus, Mike tells them to copy his precise movements in the upcoming round. He and the others remain completely silent throughout the following round of the Scare Games, but once Sulley makes a mistake, Art disorients the librarian by causing mayhem there while avoiding being caught by her. Later, during the ROR party, Art displays his dance talents before he and the other members of Oozma Kappa are humiliated by Johnny Worthington. All but Mike are dejected, but Mike lifts everyone's spirits by taking the crew to see Monsters, Inc.
Up until the last game, where they must terrify in the simulator, Art and the other players do well. Art's opponent this time around is Javier Rios. Art frightens the little robot by using his stealth and acrobatic abilities to avoid treading on any of the simulator's toys.
Oozma Kappa wins the last round, and he and the other players celebrate. However, Mike soon learns that Sulley cheated for him, and he flees inconsolably. When the gang learns that Mike entered the human realm, they use a security guards' distraction to allow Sulley to enter the door and save Mike. Roz informs the pals that whatever happens to the two is up to Dean Hardscrabble when they return while being escorted by the CDA.
After learning of Mike and Sulley's expulsion, Art and the others say their goodbyes and reassure them that Hardscrabble has invited them to join the Scaring program for the upcoming semester since she was impressed by their performance in the games.
Art's scare card may be seen in the movie's credits, implying that he subsequently became a scarer for Monsters, Inc.
