Tank Force (タンクフォース Tanku Fōsu?) is a multi-directional shooter video game developed and released by Namco in 1991; it runs on Namco System 1 hardware (and was the last to do so), and is the third game in the Tank Battalion series. The North American release was one of the seven games from the company to feature the Federal Bureau of Investigation's "Winners Don't Use Drugs" notice during attract mode. Tank Force was ported to the Wii Virtual Console in Japan only in 2009, and would later be ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2017 as part of Namco Museum.

Gameplay

Up to four players can control their tank, and the players must defeat all of the incoming tanks in each stage, while protecting their base (marked on the screen by an eagle emblem); the game now features seven different types of tanks, as well as a variety of other enemies, such as turret guns and large fighter craft that zoom over the screen. The game includes a total of fifteen powerups, which can increase the speed of the tank, increase the number of shots fired, or wipe the screen clear of all enemies.

Every fourth round of the game features a boss battle, as well as regular enemy tanks. If the players lose all of their lives or the base is destroyed, the latter of which will immediately end no matter how many lives the players have, then the game will be over; and the players can even destroy the base themselves, which will also result in a game over. After clearing all thirty-six rounds, then the game will display the official ending.

Ports

Tank Force would be ported to the Wii Virtual Console on November 10, 2009 in Japan only, and is considered an arcade-perfect port. The game would later see a rerelease outside Japan as part of the Namco Museum compilation for the Nintendo Switch on July 28, 2017.
