The Woodsman

PERFORMER Frank Oz
DEBUT 1974
PATTERN Orange Gold

The Woodsman is the deus ex machina hero in the tale of "Little Red Riding Hood." As a woodsman, he cuts down trees but isn't particularly careful when running around a room with his axe. In Sesame Street adaptations, he has been known to have difficulty showing up in the story on time.

In a Sesame Street News Flash report, the Woodsman chopped down the maple tree in front of Granny's house -- a particular favorite of the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, an act which brings the two together to exact revenge on the Woodsman.

The Woodsman (with visible eyes) appeared in the Grouch fairytale "Little Red Riding Grouch" (First: Episode 1826), performed by Martin P. Robinson. Both he and the Wolf retreat from Grandma's house when Little Red (Grundgetta) offers her repulsive Grouch dishes.
