Gus

PERFORMER Mr. Snuffleupagus
DEBUT 1984
2394e

Gus is Snuffy's puppet on Sesame Street, often performing shows in the yard with the help of Big Bird.

He first appeared during season 16 and was last used in season 25. He is often introduced as "snufflepuppet Gus," a pun on the word "Snuffleupagus." Snuffy's imagination tends to go wild while performing Gus, who has a personality much different than Snuffy. Gus is known to have a short temper at times and argues with Big Bird, though Snuffy tries to put the blame solely on Gus.

The puppet is usually performed behind a stage, concealing an extra performer doubling as Gus and Snuffy's snuffle attached to him. In scenes where Snuffy is visible while performing, performer Martin P. Robinson would either do the voice for Gus while performing Snuffy, or someone will sub as Snuffy and he performs both the snufflepuppet and Snuffy's voice at the same time.

In Episode 2394, Snuffy imagines what it would be like if Gus became a real boy (like Pinocchio). For the fantasy, the Gus puppet is given legs and a special pullstring rig that allowed him to move his mouth when he talked.
