COLD OPEN Grover tries introducing today's theme of kindness, while Elmo acts kind toward him, making him lose his train of thought.
(First: Episode 4702)

SCENE 1 Abby, Zoe and Frankie sing "Happy Earth Day" in celebration of the holiday. They intend to commemorate the day by doing the kind act of making a special space for the bugs of the garden. They intend to do this with the help of Molly the Mole (Stephanie D'Abruzzo), an expert digger (though with poor eyesight) and a shy porcupine named Carl (David Rudman). Abby asks Zoe to hold her wand while he points Molly in the right direction. Zoe sees some paper flying past and goes to investigate.

SCENE 1 cont'd The source of the paper is Rudy, who is attempting to draw a house. He points out that the paper recycling bin is too far to throw to and he believes others, like Zoe, will just clean up his mess for him. Zoe wonders what it would be like if everyone acted like Rudy. She inadvertently says this in rhyme, triggering Abby's wand to treat it like a spell. Suddenly, all of Sesame Street is covered in piles of trash and the various residents throw their refuses carelessly around.
SCENE 1 cont'd Grundgetta calls out Oscar to see what a beautiful mess Sesame Street has become. Oscar feels he might finally like living in the neighborhood after all.
SCENE 1 cont'd Abby sees what's happened and notices the butterflies leaving her garden, which is also a mess. Rudy realizes this has been all his fault. They wonder where they can find Abby's wand, which Zoe dropped into the trash pile. Molly appears and uses her digging skills to find Abby's wand.
SCENE 1 cont'd Abby restores the street to normal, where others throw their trash and recyclables away properly. As they prepare their bug garden, they all sing a song about taking care of the Earth. They then launch into a reprise of "Happy Earth Day."
SCENE 1 cont'd Oscar discovers all the trash is gone and sighs, "I knew it was too good to be true."
