Chinatown

BB-Chinatown02

Chinatown is a common name for an urban enclave with large numbers of Chinese people and/or businesses within a non-Chinese society. The two best known "Chinatown" neighborhoods are in New York City and San Francisco.

New York

The Chinatown in Manhattan has been used as the setting for several Sesame Street projects.

A number of inserts were taped in the area for season 10 of Sesame Street:

  • Big Bird and Bob discuss the area, where Big Bird admits to being afraid of the dragon puppets used in ceremonial occasions. (First: Episode 1261)
  • Big Bird telephones Mr. Snuffleupagus from Chinatown and describes a dragon puppet right next to him. Snuffy chuckles at the idea and compliments Big Bird's imagination. (First: Episode 1291)

The area would serve as the bookending location for the 1983 special Big Bird in China, as a visit sets Big Bird and Barkley off on their adventure. Over 20 years later, the location was revisited for The Magical Wand Chase, where a local girl named Lucy delivers a rap about the area and its culture.

Los Angeles

After condensation from a broken air-conditioner drenches Miss Piggy's winter collection in The Muppets episode "Pig's in a Blackout", Piggy wants to find a dry-cleaner in Chinatown to fix it.

On location shots with the Electric Mayhem in the neighborhood were used during their set at the 2016 Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival. During a pre-taped segment where the band discusses San Francisco, Animal insists that the group first met in that city's Chinatown.
